First and foremost, thanks to everyone that is supporting the Purple Heart Integration Project by participating in the inaugural Texas Master 50+ Invitational Pickleball Tournament. We have a great and fun event planned for all involved. A special thanks to tournament sponsors and local businesses that have donated so far to the tournament for this great cause, including Pulte, City of Georgetown, Academy Sports, Wriggley’s, Mulligan’s, Firo’s Pizza, Panera Bread, Chick-Fil-A, McAlister’s Deli, Panda Express, City Lights Theater, Fish City Grill, Papa Murphy’s, Mesquite Creek Outfitters, and Mas Fajitas.

This message is intended to provide some reminders and initial general information. Additional information and any necessary updates will be sent early next week.

Dates and planned start times (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY)

- Men’s and Women’s Doubles will be Saturday, November 16 (check in at 1:00; opening ceremonies at 1:30; play for ALL brackets starts at 1:45). Please do not arrive at the Tennis Center earlier than 12:30 to allow the morning tennis activities to conclude and the tennis players to leave the courts and parking lot. Because the tennis courts will be in use, we will not have courts available for warmup until around 1:00.

- Mixed Doubles and 2.5 skill round robin will be Sunday, November 17 (check in at 7:30; opening ceremonies at 8:00; play for ALL brackets starts at 8:15). The gate to the Tennis center will not be unlocked until 7:00.

We will have 14 Pickleball courts taped off on 7 tennis courts. We expect to have a couple of PB courts available for warmup throughout each day.

Please note that some or all of the remaining tennis courts will be in use by tennis players Saturday throughout the day, and Sunday starting around 1:00 PM, so we all need to mindful and respectful of those using the Tennis Center and the other courts.

Further information on the final teams and/or brackets will be sent early next week.

Location and basic directions

The tournament will be played at the Georgetown Tennis Center

Address: 400 Serenada Drive, Georgetown, TX 78628

Directions: From Williams Drive, turn onto Serenada Drive next to the QT gas station (turn left if coming from Sun City; turn right if coming from IH 35). The Tennis Center will be about 1.2 miles on the right.

Parking

There is some parking at the Tennis Center (which we must share with tennis players), but primary and overflow parking is at the Georgetown Charter Academy, which is on the right just before you reach the Tennis Center (School address is 302 Serenada Drive), and is an easy walk to/from the Tennis Center.

What you should bring

For those that never been to the Georgetown Tennis Center, the court complex is set down below the main building and is surrounded by hills that slope down to the courts. This layout presents some challenges for setting up lawn chairs, so in addition to bringing lawn chairs, consider bringing something to spread out on the hillside (such as blankets) if weather permits. Please do not bring canopies.

Food, snacks, and drinks

We are expecting to have pizza available on Saturday late afternoon (graciously donated by Firo’s Pizza). On Sunday morning, around 7:30, we are expecting to have bagels and coffee (graciously donated by Panera Bread). We plan to have water, Gatorade, and some snacks throughout both days.

Weather

We will keep our fingers crossed that the weather cooperates Friday through Sunday to allow for taping courts and playing all matches in the planned formats. But, it is November, so we may need to make adjustments to times and formats if the weather impacts setup and/or play. Our plan is to do everything we can to play, and cancellation will be our last resort with first consideration being safety of everyone involved. We will do our best to communicate changes as soon as we can.

Miscellaneous

- No bags on courts for safety during play.

- Please plan to bring 2 large, old towels in case we need to dry courts Saturday or Sunday. If towels are needed, we will ask for them when they are needed. Consider putting your name on towels, and we will do our best to allow you to get them back (but cannot guarantee).

- Gold medal matches (and possibly Bronze medal matches) will have a referee; other matches will be self-refereed by the players.

- Franklin X-40 ball is the tournament ball.

- Medals will be awarded each day for completed events.

- Players will receive a ticket at check-in each day for a drawing for prizes that have been donated by local businesses.

This is a great tournament for "First Timers", as there is no USAPA association membership required. The tournament will be held Saturday November 16th, and 17th at the Georgetown Tennis Center, 400 Serenada Dr. in Georgetown, TX 78627.

This tournament is a fund-raising event with the proceeds going to the Purple Heart Integration Project (www.PHIProject.org), a Texas Non-profit, all volunteer organization developing a Live/Work Community for our Wounded Warriors. Please visit the website for more information or to get involved.

The tournament is non-sanctioned and open to participants 50 years and older (age as of 12/31/2019).
